Donations The mission of the Archives of the Carnegie Institution of Washington is to preserve the historically significant records of the Institution and make them available to Institution personnel, scientists, historians, and other scholars. The Archives document the activities of the Institution's administration and its research departments and the professional activities of its staff members. We encourage inquiries from individuals, groups, and organizations who wish to contribute historically significant documents regarding the institution, its departments, staff, or researchers. Benefits of Donation Documents donated to the Carnegie Institution archives will be arranged, described and preserved according to archival best practices. Collections will be available to scholars and researchers, while finding aids generated for each collection will enhance their usability. Donors may also be eligible for tax deductions. Please consult a tax advisor. Kinds of Records The Carnegie Institution archives collects historical records of the P Street administrative headquarters, historical administrative records of the CIW scientific departments, selected records of CIW administrative and scientific staff, including scientific data and other records reflecting the goals and activities of CIW on a case by case basis. We are interested in primary documents such as direct correspondence, laboratory notebooks, journals, scientific logs, instrument traces, and photographs (either of apparatus, scientific phenomena, researchers, or historically significant places). Process and Decision If you have documents that you believe are suitable and are interested in donating, please inquire first (see the form immediately below). The Carnegie Institution reserves the final decision regarding accepting potential donations. Because we exist to make knowledge available as widely as possible, we are unable to accept any significant restrictions on the use or availability of donated documents. For similar reasons, we are unable to accept loans to the archives and can accept only gifts. Of course, the generosity of donors will be acknowledged by appropriate attribution of collections, and donors will have ready access to their contributions. We will contact you as soon as possible after your inquiry. A PDF version of a Deed of Gift form (16 KB) is available. Thank you for your interest in the Carnegie Legacy Project and the Carnegie archives. |
